KopiTalk is a student-led initiative driven by a single goal; to raise awareness and address mental health problems in Malaysian students studying in Australia.
KopiTalk was the brainchild of a roundtable discussion at the Australian National Leadership Summit (ANLS) held in January 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The discussion saw a general consensus surrounding lack of mental health aid catered to the social and cultural nuances of the Malaysian dilemma. As a result, all 52 Malaysian Student organisations on behalf of 10,000 Malaysian students collectively agreed to create a mental health website that would cater to the needs of Malaysians in Australia.
The website was named "KopiTalk" - kopi (coffee in Malay) and Talk, signifying the need for discourse on such matters. This initiative is currently spearheaded by MASCA's former National Welfare Director, Suwarna Ramanathan who is studying medicine in UNSW. She is joined by 5 other students at the core level and is supported by MASCA National at a more administrative level.
KopiTalk aims to encourage conversations on current dilemmas and issues considered taboo in hopes of raising awareness.
